James Blake diary, 1769-1771.

Diary of teacher and minister James Blake, kept in Weymouth, Mass., from 5 Aug. 1769 - 6 Nov. 1771. Blake taught school in Weymouth while studying for the ministry with Rev. William Smith, minister of the First Congregational Church of Weymouth (and father of Abigail Adams). Blake's entries note keeping school in Weymouth, ministerial duties, and visits with family members and friends, both at home and in neighboring towns. Occasional entries note local news, the ordination of local clergy, and commencement ceremonies at Harvard College.

Samuel Mather (1677-1746) was a member of a prominent Connecticut family. He was born in Branford, Connecticut in 1677; his parents were the Reverend Samuel and Hannah (Treat) Mather. When Samuel was four, his family moved to Windsor, Connecticut. He attended Harvard College, receiving an A.B. in 1698 and an A.M. in 1701.
